2	Kickboxing, super welterweight, 150lbs	Siavosh Fard, SKA Burnaby BC	Def.	Karen Vrar, Bisla Martial Arts Surrey BC	Went to the judges. Fard had dynamite spinning back kicks and spinning hook kicks, but we also saw a late kick after the round 2 bell. A close fight, and one judge gave it to Vrar while the other two gave it to Fard for the majority decision.
3	Boxing, Junior Light weight, 130 lbs	Asif Anwary, Fight Team 604, New Westminster BC	Def.	Leo Samarelli Wolf’s Den, North Vancouver BC	Win by majority judges decision.
4	Muay Thai, junior welterweight 145lbs	Jay Hosseini Universal Martial Arts Maple Ridge BC	Def.	Jordan Gieble Canada’s Best Karate Victoria	Hosseini came out hard and fast and aggressive from the start. He put in a leg kick so hard Gieble was given a standing count. Gieble had to favor the leg for the rest of the match until the referee called stoppage, and TKO win for Hosseini.
5	Muay Thai, Welterweight 147 lbs	Lute Ganief WKX Surrey BC	Def.	Terrance Viloria Mendoza Fight Team Surrey BC	Unanimous judges decision, to Lute Ganeif. Viloria faded a bit in round 3 after being well matched and aggressive throughout the fight.
6	Kickboxing super middleweight 165 lbs	Kevin Lam Posener’s Muay Thai Vancouver BC	Def.	Dev Havoc Rakkar independent, Vancouver BC	1:53 ref stoppage, Rakkar did not respond well, did not keep his gloves up, and was schooled quickly out of the fight.
7	MMA bantamweight 118lbs	Jamie Gonzales Charlies Combat Club, Everett WA	Def.	Nicola Hicks Team Denarius New Westminster, BC	Nicola got Gonzales on the ground quickly and owned mount until referee stoppage at 45 seconds.
8	MMA welterweight 170 lbs	Adriano Digiacinto Wolfe’s Den North Vancouver BC	Def.	Justyn Rackstraw fight team 604 Maple Ridge BC	Rackstraw, who apparently was seen in Coquitlam on Wednesday eating a kfc double down and smoking a cigarette was stopped from continuing by the referee at about 2:00 of round 1.
9	MMA, Pacific Northwest Welterweight Title	Leo Xavier Universal Martial Arts Vancouver BC	Def.	Marquez Bryant Crisis MMA Olympia Wa	Initial parrys led to Leo Xavier getting the upper position and eventually was able to work it into a full mount – but not without a fight from Bryant. Leo transitioned into an armbar from mount and as Bryant was making every effort to escape, he turned it into a triangle. Nice show of skills for a 1:51 round 1 win by triangle choke.
10	Muay Thai Middleweight 160 lbs	Andrew Lewis Nak Muay Duncan Island BC	Def.	Bruce Khademi WKC Surrey BC	Lewis showed awesome persistence with high kicks in a very evenly contested matchup. He would get the majority decision from the judges.
11	MMA middleweight 185 lbs	Kyle Warman Gracie Barra Arts Kelowna BC	Def.	Tyrone Anderson Tactics MMA Vancouver BC	Both warriors in this matchup battled massively in the first round to no real outcome. They both deeply depleted their gas tanks and had to demonstrate deep resolve to fight the next 2 rounds of 3 minutes each The judges would give it unanimously, 29 – 28 to Kyle Warman, despite that Warman spending so much time in round 3 under mount.
12	MMA Light heavyweight 190 lbs	Kiarash Moghaddam Versus Training Center Vancouver BC	Def.	David Correa Crisis MMA Olympia Wa	Kiarash Moghaddam managed Correa well enough on the ground to take the side arm choke position and finish the fight at 1:30 of round 1.
13	Muay Thai, Pacific Northwest Welterweight Title	Josh Jauncey WKX Surrey BC	Def.	Jason Hinds Pound 4 Pound Markham Ontario	An exciting well matched fight that showed lots of sweeps, the fighters ramped up their efforts with each round. Jauncey pulled out ahead in round 5. He even showed some flashy ducking and weaving and a round kick resulting from being swept. Judges would give the fight unanimously to Jauncey.

On a recent trip to Kamloops, and needing a place to roll, I came upon MMA fighter Matt Baker’s new gym, Mata-Leao MMA. For a measure of how much mixed martial arts is making inroads to our way of life, the new martial arts gyms are a far better example of how relevant it has become, rather than UFC on Fox. How nice it is to see the new generation of MMA fighters like Matt Baker already giving back to the sport they love by opening gyms, bringing the fundamental components of mixed martial arts to a new generation of young athletes who want to learn it and train it. I took mat away from his busy schedule to tell me a bit more about his fight background and his new gym.

Matt Baker is a Canadian MMA fighter with a 10-0 amateur and a 7-3 pro record, currently fighting for Battlefield Fight League. Matt is the only Canadian on Team Nogueira, out of Rio De Janeiro Brazil. His own martial arts education has given him the opportunity to roll and train with some heavy hitters like Minotaur Noguiera, Minotauro, Anderson Silva, Tony Mariano, the #1 ranked fighter in the world outside of UFC, Bigfoot Silva, ex Strikeforce champ, Rafael Cavalcante… Matt says the gym is amazing for fighting at 185, lots of light heavyweights and 185s. No doubt!

Matt explained that the name for the gym, Mata-Leao MMA, is from the Portuguese for ‘lion kills’, which is another name for the rear naked choke. The expression also comes from the legend of Hercules. In one of Hercules’ 10 quests, he defeated the Nemean Lion with its impenetrable skin by applying a rear naked choke.

Mata-Leao naturally has a kickboxing program, and a gi and no gi program. The Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gi program is run by Andre Taniguiti. Originally from Brazil, Taniguiti trained at Axis Jiu-jitsu in Japan. Matt says Andrey is a very good brown belt. Matt runs the mma and no gi side of things, as well as personal training sessions.

I asked Matt what was his personal approach to training and the kind of gym he was hoping to run. He said, “I like working with kids, I just get lost training in classes with kids, I have a gym in my home town because it takes me away from training at my fight camps, I relax, I do it for the fun, I don’t do it for the money… The gym is open since January 2012. It’s the first year in business and I already have over 30 students. I am taking down about 8 of my students to Tiger Balm 2012 this weekend. For 90% of them it’s their first tournament. Hopefully from there the gym is going to grow, the school is going to grow, and there will be more tournaments to come. If I can’t one day be a champion myself, I would like to coach a champion. That would be my ultimate goal. Hopefully one day, I’ll make it to the Kamloops Sports Hall of fame like Tom Laroche, my first sifu.

King of the Rock 3 Fight Results – Judson TKO Upset Win Over Downey

Fight Results

1	Shelley Strachan	Def.	Megan Williams	Womens Kickboxing. Strachan got the win by unanimous judges decision. A great opening match to King of the Rock 3. Williams and Strachan are both well known to the local scene and for the large crowd in attendance kicked things off with a very good fast paced fight.
2	Colin Butts	Def.	Tyler Mertens	Amateur MMA match. A great matchup for two young local mma fighters. Colin Butts gets a win by referee stoppage due to ground and pound, in round 2. While the end was decisive, Tyler Mertens showed great technique that has to be noted. The front kick is the most elementary martial art technique and also the most underrated. Mertens used front kicks very effectively throughout the match, paring them with notable jab and uppercut combinations. Colin Butts did manage to get through to Mertens and draw first blood on him, and a sizeable amount of it that cause the fight Doctor to almost call the fight right there. The fight ended when Colin Butts worked out of Tyler Mertens headlock to get the dominant position on the mat to bring the fight to a decisive finish.
3	Marty Wise	Def.	Matt Shannon	Amateur MMA. Marty Wise wisely finished the fight early. After blows landing on target and a short ground fight for position, Wise easily coaxed the lesser experienced Shannon over to take his back to get into a submission by rear naked choke.
4	Johnathan Dubois	Def.	Dave Koliwski	Exhibition Boxing. Johnathan Dubois showed off what a threat he can be as a boxer in this exhibition match. Despite being well outmatched for height and reach, Dubois got inside on Koliwski, knocking him down for a first, second, then third time which finally and decisively led to the referee stoppage. Dubois then knocked down Koliwski hard for the third time in round 1 and was awarded TKO by referee stoppage.
4	Dillon Brown	&	Lee Muller	Exhibition Kickboxing. Dillon Brown, showed his skills as a fighter by working the pocket fearlessly in a flowing exhibition match against Lee Muller of Canada’s Best Karate.
6	Scott Judson	Def.	Mike Downey	Amateur Kickboxing / Muay Thai. The story goes that some time ago, Scott Judson saw Mike Downey wearing a championship belt in a bar after one of his wins. Judson told Mike Downey then and there that he wanted that belt! While that particular belt wasn’t on the line at King of the Rock 3, Judson and Downey did agree to throw down over a belt, and that is how they came to be matched for the main card. Knowing Downey’s reputation as a fighter already holding several championship titles, not to mention his very recent return from a training camp in Thailand, most people would have bet on the experienced Downey over Judson, the cocky local. Problem is, nobody told Judson he couldn’t win the fight, and nobody told his numerous fans in the crowd either. Inside the ring, Judson got Downey in round 1 with a sweep and the crowd went wild. Mike Downey did a great deal to shore up his scorecard in round two, sweeping Judson twice and taking the fight to him. But round 3 gave Judson the opportunity to beat Downey with power and accuracy, knocking him down once, and then finally a second time. Downey got hit hard in there, and not having the ability to get up it would bring an end the fight by TKO. Its a bit of a surprise victory, even a bit of an upset. Judson did all he could to impress and made sure the decision wasn’t left up to the judges.

3	Muay Thai Welterweight 147 lbs	Terrance Viloria Mendoza Fight Team Surrey BC	Def.	Pat Alec North Shore Fight Team North Vancouver BC	Bit of a delay for the judges on this one. A split decision goes to Terrance Viloria, who poured on great action on Alec in the third round and took his game apart.

Kenny looked tight and had hard flurries for Correa. Early on, Correa who is more of an mma player, did not look like an organized kickboxer. Usually we hear about the other way around, where kickboxers dont make a good transition into MMA.

7	MMA NAC Flyweight Title	Cheryl Chan Mendoza Fight Team Surrey BC	Def.	Jamie Gonzales Charlie’s Fight Club Everett, Wa	Tapout by triangle choke and armbar in round 2. We saw a case of how working a fighter in guard up against a cage doesnt work that way with a roped ring. The fight had to be brought back to the center and stood up a number of times. Chan just bided her time and showed off a win buy triangle from the bottom position.

9	Muay Thai Welterweight 145lbs	Josh Jauncey WKX Surrey BC	Def.	Chris Ferguson Mas Thai Boxing Cambridge Ont.	Jauncey took out Ferguson quickly with a standing eight count before the first minute and then put him down again to end the fight at 1:50 of round 1.
10	MMA NAC Welterweight Title	Cass Young Team Bad Boy Outreach Surrey BC	Def.	Brett Lucero Crisis MMA Olympia Wa	Broken nose and bloody, Cass managed to keep dominant on Lucero. Judges unanimous decision.
11	Muay Thai NAC Light Cruiserweight Title	Adam Blanchette Iron City Muay Thai Vancouver BC	Def.	Martello Jones Ottawa Academy of Martial Arts Ottawa On	Adam Blanchette wins by judges unanimous decision. Blanchette kept a hard and tough clinch game on Jones for much of the match.

Claude Sanders: This is what I train for… scoring with his leg kicks is what I train for, makes it painful for him if he doesnt block them.

Iouri Saveliev: I remember most of it, happens so fast, hard to remember. Took a hard right at one point. In my training I practiced a lot of Jiu-jitsu, heard my coach calling pass pass pass, got the armbar, and next thing I know that was it.

Terrance Viloria vs Justin Viejou

Terrance Viloria: I should have worked my jab more, but a fight’s a fight. I heard he was lanky, long, … The first leg kick I had on him hurt him so I thought if this works I should do this more.

Navi Marzary vs Jeremy Neufeld

Navi Marzary: I fought him once before, he stopped half way through the first round. I dont know why he wanted a rematch, so I wasnt expecting it to go long.

Ricky Keohavong vs Ab Shubear

Ricky Keohavong: I trained hard for a different fighter, for 194 he pulled out at the last minute and this guy was 230, but I am a fighter, so I’ll take the fight.

Novic Pavic vs Jordan Howes

Novic Pavic: Didnt win the way I wanted to, didnt show all my skills, but I’m still happy with the win.

Robin Laybourne vs Lloyd Kenny

Robin Laybourne: I am grateful for my trainers, Caleb Starnes, 120 friends in the audience, lots of people get surprised by the agility of such a big guy, training with good guys is the only way that I won.

Sasha Tadayoni vs Jean Allard

The Referee would call and end to the fight after the third knockdown at the end of round 1. Tatayoni, a Kyokushin karate practitioner, showed of dynamite leg kicks including a triple combination that was lightning fast, had to be seen.

Tony Vaga vs Matt Riley

Tony Vaga: I really took it to my opponent, I wasnt sure why the fight was stood up when it should have been called.

Hardeep Saran vs Toby Cleary

Hardeep Saran: Going into the fight I was confident, had a good game plan. Inder Bisla helped me a lot with my kicks.

Josh Jauncey vs Ruel Copeland

Josh Jauncey: We knew he was going to fight quite Thai style… he was heavy on his legs; I wasnt able to get him with the inside low kick. After this I am looking to fight in the Netherlands in the future.

Stas Tatarinov vs Alan Day

Stas Tatarinov: I blocked some leg kicks, that’s why I have some bruises… the guy towered over him in the ring a bit, and I took the fight for the challenge.

James Hansen vs Chad Gerow

James Hansen: It wasnt so much of a battle of attrition, we really tried to feel out each other in the first round, we didnt push our pace and I picked my shots. I will be back in the gym right away for a fight under Master Song.

Jesse Rice-Jones vs Alfonso Cavero

Cavero almost had Rice-Jones in a rear naked choke but Jones was able to get out of it and to his feet after a monumental struggle. He was able to corner Cavero and pound him out to win by referee stoppage in round 1.
