My fight blog on Saturday night was at the first ever Battlefield Fight League at Rocky Mountaineer Station in Vancouver. The well promoted event has a series of pre-fight interviews on my martial arts blog with fighters talking tough in the run-up to the fight. The event would first start off with a very special donation to BC Children’s Hospital, handed over by Battlefield Promoter Jay Golshani and several local martial arts gym in greater Vancouver.
The action started off when Andrew Valiquette quickly defeated Tarki Alsafi. The fight ended so fast I didn’t get a photo of it. Mai Aung from Suitela’s took on Adam Miskewitz of Total Package Sports Management. It was a well matched up fight; Adam worked is way back up from the ground, but could not get up from the ground battle a second time and tapped out from an armbar.
Sarah Macleod was back in the ring for the first time since her exhibition kickboxing match at Fight at The View III to take on cage first timer Olesha Karrington. Neither fighter would get definitive traction on the ground, although Olesha held Sarah in a headlock and Sarah was able to gain side control and inflict knee strikes. The match would go to the second round, after a wardrobe malfunction was sorted out. The fight was ended by referee stoppage when Karrington stopped responding to a Macleod’s volley of punches.
It was a calmer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner David Kennedy that would force a tapout in the first round against Jeremy Peever.
Gary Mangat was pitted against Alford Wesley in a well matched and mixed up fight. Mangat worked in body locks and back rides on Wesley to finally force him into a rear naked choke at the end of the first round.
Nick Marinos was back after his tapout last month against Sony Sahota with something to prove. This time against Josh Lewis in the welterweight class. Tricky worked hard to turn the fight to his advantage. He dominated by the end of the first round and came back in the second to finish off what he started. The referee stoppage put an end to the fight thirty seconds in.
Clay Ayres was not able to withstand the punishing blows from Jason Brooks in this catchweight fight once Brooks passed the guard. He was only able to block and protect until the referee called an end to the fight.
Achilles Estremadura and Andy Marinos were well matched 165 lb combattants in a fight that went to the second round. The fight would end in a rear naked choke on the ground for Achilles.
The fight between Devron Roller and Bryce Gougeon was called by the judges to be no contest due to an eye gouge suffered by Devron Roller in the second round. Matt Dwyer and Shawn Zubor were on the card as the co-main event for an mma fight in the welterweight division. In a bit of an upset for Zubor, Dwyer would win by rear naked choke on the ground at 2:12 of the first round over the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter Zubor.
Tak Sasaki from Wolf’s Den North Vancouver was back for the first time since being on the main card at the Edgewater Casino fight night last year, this time to take on Chris Day from Team Havock in Kelowna in the only fight that would go the distance of three three minute rounds. Tak lead the first two rounds clearly with body slams and a standup game against an opponent that had some spinning back kicks and no boxing to speak of. Tak would get stuck on the ground in an armbar in the third and held on until the bell. The judges responded by delivering a split decision to Tak.
Defences against rear naked chokes are important, but none of the fighters who went down to it at this fight night looked liked they were able to deal with it. Not an easy situation ever to face in a fight but it was the scenario we saw several times in the eleven fights on the card.
