Xtreme Couture Jiu-jitsu coach Neil Melanson came to Revolution Chilliwack over the weekend to teach a seminar on grappling for MMA. I am still going over my photos from the two day seminar – we drilled tons of techniques. One clever little trick is this choke. Call it “Front fist choke while cradling the head from the mount position”. Or, as Neil Melanson put it, “You are jamming a hard bone up into the throat”.  Its a shocking little choke for sure and it is all the more nasty by the fact that, my lord, it takes almost no pressure at all to impose enough pain for a submission from your opponent.

Here are a couple of real warriors going at it! Came across this on YouTube and it has to be reblogged.

Text from the YouTube post at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsPIzRsUtlE

Prior to the departure of 31 Canadian Brigade Group (31 CBG) personnel from Camp Atterbury, Indiana, Canadian soldiers observed US National Guard soldiers playing an interesting version of the game Tug of War. 31 CBG soldiers were fascinated by the spectacle and cheered on the competitors. Finally, one young Canadian soldier dared to challenge the hometown crowd, and put national pride on the line. In this video, Master Corporal John Celestino of the Windsor Regiment, participates in a game of Tug of War with a US National Guard soldier. This version of the game builds esprit de corps and really works the leg muscles…just ask Master Corporal Celestino!

Go Canada! But seriously, any way this matchup went down, this looks like a super tough conditioning exercise. Those legs are going to hurt tomorrow! OSU!

The guy ridicules Canada and how we do business for no reason after he is asked question about offer!! He calls us socialist (well I should not feel disrespected or insulted for this one maybe!) acts like a cocky, immature, impatient child in an interview and I don’t know why he was so pissed off with the questions.

Seriously which one of his questions of his interview with TSN was stupid, boring or etc?

This is the guy who has been accused of money laundering, steroid abuse, has been submitted almost every other match who runs his mouth all the time. I can’t wait to see Anderson knocks him out this time.

It is cool to sell yourself as a character and sell tickets, what you did Mr. Sonnen was not cool at all. You did not like the questions, be a little bit professional and respond appropriately. I am sure tons of fighters have been asked questions which they have not liked or have found boring but I have not seen anybody do what you did.

You call GSP, Grease St. Pierre and admire him as a fighter. Dude I just can’t understand you!

You make fun of fighters, ring girls, commentators, countries…do you have respect for anyone but yourself?!

What is Chael talking about here? He may just be a guy with a big mouth, but when I saw this video, I thought for a second that maybe he is on to something.  What we know about martial arts came to us through Hollywood, or the Chinese version of it. MMA made Martial Arts evolve so much that what it is now hardly resembles what it was before MMA came along. Its good at least to stop and take stock of what we have all become in this day and age. Sonnen is basically saying there is no ‘martial arts’ in what he does, which he calls ‘fighting’. Maybe the dude has a point here.

I spotted a post tonight from theatlantic.com about a California fight club created by geeks working at the big names in tech that we all know like Google and Apple, among others.  The urge to stand and bang is finding its way deeper into society, where people are taking their stress of their work and lives and turning it into power. They do bare knuckles, stick fighting, and then have fun with toys like a dustbuster battle, chairs, and computer keyboards.

Hmm, I wonder if they have any room down there? I am a PHP coder, I wonder if I could get down there and kick some dev butt. In tech, I have noticed that people’s lifestyles gravitate to one of two poles: they are either  vegan bike riders, or they are Jabba the Hut. Good to see these people considering the choices to make in their lives, and contemplating the meaning of the fight.

Need an enforcer? UFC and Boost Mobile have teamed up to offer a contest for the rest of us working stiffs. Got an asshole co-worker that messes with your shit, or some job that is just plain shitty? You aint gettin no respect? DUDE! You can enter the contest UFC and Boost Mobile are offering to bring in a UFC fighter on your job. Who better than a battle hardened cage fighter to make people listen and respect you? Come to think of it, I could have used someone like Rich Franklin many times over in the workplace to straighten out jerk offs that pushed me around. Dana White could be on to something here.
