I spotted a post tonight from theatlantic.com about a California fight club created by geeks working at the big names in tech that we all know like Google and Apple, among others. The urge to stand and bang is finding its way deeper into society, where people are taking their stress of their work and lives and turning it into power. They do bare knuckles, stick fighting, and then have fun with toys like a dustbuster battle, chairs, and computer keyboards.
Hmm, I wonder if they have any room down there? I am a PHP coder, I wonder if I could get down there and kick some dev butt. In tech, I have noticed that people’s lifestyles gravitate to one of two poles: they are either vegan bike riders, or they are Jabba the Hut. Good to see these people considering the choices to make in their lives, and contemplating the meaning of the fight.
Tommy Conlon returns to his hometown of Pittsburgh and enlists his father, a recovered alcoholic and his former coach, to train him for an MMA tournament awarding the biggest purse in the history of the sport. Meanwhile, his estranged brother, Brendan, a former MMA fighter unable to make ends meet as a public school teacher, returns to the amateur ring to provide for his family after being suspended from his day job. When Brendan’s unlikely rise as an underdog sets him on a collision course with Tommy, the two brothers must finally confront the forces that tore them apart, all the while waging the most intense, winner-takes-all battle of their lives.

Need an enforcer? UFC and Boost Mobile have teamed up to offer a contest for the rest of us working stiffs. Got an asshole co-worker that messes with your shit, or some job that is just plain shitty? You aint gettin no respect? DUDE! You can enter the contest UFC and Boost Mobile are offering to bring in a UFC fighter on your job. Who better than a battle hardened cage fighter to make people listen and respect you? Come to think of it, I could have used someone like Rich Franklin many times over in the workplace to straighten out jerk offs that pushed me around. Dana White could be on to something here.

Damien Martindale vs Adam Santos
Damien Martindale Brazilan Jiu-Jitsu School Astoria Oregon def. Adam Santos Morganti Jiu-jitsu Canada Richmond BC. My earlier report sent some blowback my way from Martindale’s team. Seems I am a poor, biased asshole. Apparently, Martindale took the fight with only a few days notice. Jesse Hoover must have backed out due to injury, and so this is the matchup we got.
Martindale and Santos are heavyweights for different reasons. Santos is big and tall. Martindale is a guy with a big gut. From almost the beginning of the match Martindale would take Santos to the ground and control him. It came back to me as soon as I saw this happening, because a big guy strategy is to get his opponent on the ground and hold him there, like I saw in the no gi open division at Tiger Balm a couple years back. Its a tough situation to be in; very little you can do about it. The three rounds would repeat the process of taking Santos to the ground. The strategy we saw in the ring was a part of their plan, to go for ‘a safe easy win’. It was indeed a legal and technically correct way to win a mma fight, but a bit boring. What I dont understand was why did the referee allow the ground game to go on for so long without standing the fighters up? The fight fans were shouting out to stand up the fighters. Other fights earlier in the card were stood up to pick up the action again, but not this one. By the time Santos loosened up the battle on Martindale, it was late in the final round. Martindale would win by unanimous judges decision. After an insanely fantastic undercard, the crowd just wanted to see more action in the main event. I guess the bad guy has to win sometime. I probably put it too directly in my short notes about the fight in my earlier results post, which goes up as soon as possible after the fight with minimal editing. But what we saw that night was a conservative style with a conservative referee that had a big impact on the final result.
Videos via the fight team at BCMMA.com, I have some of the fights as shot by Jorge Parra from Underdogprod.com.
