Looks like Coca-cola Zero likes to sponsor fighters and things about fighting. My spy in Hong Kong sent me this shot of an unnamed but presumably ranked fighter smiling for Coke Zero and we hope he is getting a nice paycheck for it.
But ah yes, that brings to mind another sighting of Coke Zero. They were also a sponsor embossed on the mat for a PRIME mma fight in Brazil. It looks like MMA fighter Eder Jones had a big swig of the sponsor beverage after winning his fight.
Oferecimento,coca cola zero!
I recall that Coke annoyed a lot of people in Vancouver when they enforced their exclusive deal with VOC making it basically a CoKe only event. Maybe they should let the athletes have something a little easier on the stomach after competing. Just saying…
| No | Style | Win | Def | Loss | Reason |
| 1 | Mma 135 lbs | Cesar Cortes, Universal Martial Arts, Vancouver BC | Def. | Matt Spiff-e Shannon fight team 604, Burnaby BC | By referee stoppage at 2:50, ground and pound. Total domination by Cortes. |
| 2 | Kickboxing, super welterweight, 150lbs | Siavosh Fard, SKA Burnaby BC | Def. | Karen Vrar, Bisla Martial Arts Surrey BC | Went to the judges. Fard had dynamite spinning back kicks and spinning hook kicks, but we also saw a late kick after the round 2 bell. A close fight, and one judge gave it to Vrar while the other two gave it to Fard for the majority decision. |
| 3 | Boxing, Junior Light weight, 130 lbs | Asif Anwary, Fight Team 604, New Westminster BC | Def. | Leo Samarelli Wolf’s Den, North Vancouver BC | Win by majority judges decision. |
| 4 | Muay Thai, junior welterweight 145lbs | Jay Hosseini Universal Martial Arts Maple Ridge BC | Def. | Jordan Gieble Canada’s Best Karate Victoria | Hosseini came out hard and fast and aggressive from the start. He put in a leg kick so hard Gieble was given a standing count. Gieble had to favor the leg for the rest of the match until the referee called stoppage, and TKO win for Hosseini. |
| 5 | Muay Thai, Welterweight 147 lbs | Lute Ganief WKX Surrey BC | Def. | Terrance Viloria Mendoza Fight Team Surrey BC | Unanimous judges decision, to Lute Ganeif. Viloria faded a bit in round 3 after being well matched and aggressive throughout the fight. |
| 6 | Kickboxing super middleweight 165 lbs | Kevin Lam Posener’s Muay Thai Vancouver BC | Def. | Dev Havoc Rakkar independent, Vancouver BC | 1:53 ref stoppage, Rakkar did not respond well, did not keep his gloves up, and was schooled quickly out of the fight. |
| 7 | MMA bantamweight 118lbs | Jamie Gonzales Charlies Combat Club, Everett WA | Def. | Nicola Hicks Team Denarius New Westminster, BC | Nicola got Gonzales on the ground quickly and owned mount until referee stoppage at 45 seconds. |
| 8 | MMA welterweight 170 lbs | Adriano Digiacinto Wolfe’s Den North Vancouver BC | Def. | Justyn Rackstraw fight team 604 Maple Ridge BC | Rackstraw, who apparently was seen in Coquitlam on Wednesday eating a kfc double down and smoking a cigarette was stopped from continuing by the referee at about 2:00 of round 1. |
| 9 | MMA, Pacific Northwest Welterweight Title | Leo Xavier Universal Martial Arts Vancouver BC | Def. | Marquez Bryant Crisis MMA Olympia Wa | Initial parrys led to Leo Xavier getting the upper position and eventually was able to work it into a full mount – but not without a fight from Bryant. Leo transitioned into an armbar from mount and as Bryant was making every effort to escape, he turned it into a triangle. Nice show of skills for a 1:51 round 1 win by triangle choke. |
| 10 | Muay Thai Middleweight 160 lbs | Andrew Lewis Nak Muay Duncan Island BC | Def. | Bruce Khademi WKC Surrey BC | Lewis showed awesome persistence with high kicks in a very evenly contested matchup. He would get the majority decision from the judges. |
| 11 | MMA middleweight 185 lbs | Kyle Warman Gracie Barra Arts Kelowna BC | Def. | Tyrone Anderson Tactics MMA Vancouver BC | Both warriors in this matchup battled massively in the first round to no real outcome. They both deeply depleted their gas tanks and had to demonstrate deep resolve to fight the next 2 rounds of 3 minutes each The judges would give it unanimously, 29 – 28 to Kyle Warman, despite that Warman spending so much time in round 3 under mount. |
| 12 | MMA Light heavyweight 190 lbs | Kiarash Moghaddam Versus Training Center Vancouver BC | Def. | David Correa Crisis MMA Olympia Wa | Kiarash Moghaddam managed Correa well enough on the ground to take the side arm choke position and finish the fight at 1:30 of round 1. |
| 13 | Muay Thai, Pacific Northwest Welterweight Title | Josh Jauncey WKX Surrey BC | Def. | Jason Hinds Pound 4 Pound Markham Ontario | An exciting well matched fight that showed lots of sweeps, the fighters ramped up their efforts with each round. Jauncey pulled out ahead in round 5. He even showed some flashy ducking and weaving and a round kick resulting from being swept. Judges would give the fight unanimously to Jauncey. |
4th round Kimura means you went long and held it through and found a way. Well done Tija Stanley!!!!
Here are a couple of real warriors going at it! Came across this on YouTube and it has to be reblogged.

Prior to the departure of 31 Canadian Brigade Group (31 CBG) personnel from Camp Atterbury, Indiana, Canadian soldiers observed US National Guard soldiers playing an interesting version of the game Tug of War. 31 CBG soldiers were fascinated by the spectacle and cheered on the competitors. Finally, one young Canadian soldier dared to challenge the hometown crowd, and put national pride on the line. In this video, Master Corporal John Celestino of the Windsor Regiment, participates in a game of Tug of War with a US National Guard soldier. This version of the game builds esprit de corps and really works the leg muscles…just ask Master Corporal Celestino!
Go Canada! But seriously, any way this matchup went down, this looks like a super tough conditioning exercise. Those legs are going to hurt tomorrow! OSU!
Photographer Ron Sombilon shoots Tiger Balm March 2012 for the sport clothing line RYU – Respect Your Universe. RYU came to Tiger Balm 2012 to show the love, and honour martial arts by documenting the competitors and action on the mats.
Tiger Balm is such a great event that should be a part of the path of every aspiring martial artist. It’s an annual two day event that brings together a great number of different disciplines, from Kung-fu, and weapons, to Kata, Pankration, and kickboxing. It’s for every category of age and experience, from tyke to tough guy, and of course, girl.
What has always impressed me about Tiger Balm is how it is an event made for the regular people that go to the dojos and gyms to test their skills in safely organized and credibly judged combat. Tiger Balm encapsulates the great diversity and quality of the local martial arts scene, with only a few exceptions. The people who compete bring all their passion and love for what they do and then they go hard. Some get a battle scar, some win, some lose, but they all learn something about themselves in the process.
